Ageing Gracefully
Saw this article in the Pop Club magazine (by Popular Book Store) a few years back. It had 18 pointers for ageing gracefully. To reduce the length of this post, I have summarised the original article and added some of my input.
1 Make Smart Lifestyle Choices
- Do not smoke
- Do not indulge in alcohols
- Eat healthily and moderately (less red meat, balanced diet)
- Have a good sleep habit without keeping late
nights
- Exercise moderately
2 Love Ourselves, Respect
Others
- Take care of ourselves
- Take care of others' feelings
3 Listen to Our Body
- Do not ignore pains and aches, do not wait till
it is too late
4 Family Medical History
- Be aware of the kind of medical history that
runs in the family (parents, grandparents), keep a look out for
signs
5 Exercise Our Brains
- The more we exercise our brains, the better it
gets
- Play more games like brainteasers and puzzles
that constantly challenges the brain
6 Financial Independence
- Take control of our own finances, do not rely
on others
- Save in the bank, for the rainy days
7 Develop Our Personality
- The heart is more important than the looks
8 Attitude is Everything
- When we have the right attitude, everything
will fall nicely in place
9 Censor Our Inner Critic
- Try not to criticise ourselves when things go
wrong, instead, cheer ourselves to do better
10 Lighten Up
- Learn to laugh
- Learn to see the funny side of things
- Laughter, really, is the best medicine
11 Write it Down, Get it Out
- Writing is therapeutic
- Try writing out our stress and worries on a
piece of paper, and let it all out by tearing it away
12 Establish a Strong Social Support Network
- Make friends with people from all age groups
- Be sincere about the friendships
13 Love Life, Live Life
- Never stop learning
- Engage in activities that are meaningful
14 Find a Role Model
- Pinpoint someone with the right qualities and attitude, and
emulate (copy, follow) them, learn from them
15 Give Back to the Society
- Donate, do nice things to others, make someone
smile
- The returns may not be monetary, but it will
definitely give us immense fulfillment
16 Avoid Negativism
- Negative people are life suckers who suck the
life out of ours. Stop complaining, stop assuming, stop saying the world
is not fair to us
- Surround ourselves with positivism and
positive people. Look on the bright side, strive for the best.
Understand the truth
17 Learn to Say No
- Learning to say no to certain activities and
to certain people frees up time for us to do other things
- Learning to say no to illegal or bad things
will see us a long way in life
18 Practice Moderation in All We Do
- Discipline ourselves
- In whatever we do, do not overdo, and do not
undercut
