Is the Chicken Successful

Came across something interesting from a TV program.

The rice plant is one of the most successful plant species on earth, because man's successful cultivation of rice ensures the rice survival as a species.  The rice plants hence do not need to compete with other plant species for space and nutrients, because all these are taken care of by human beings.  On top of that, humans develop better rice varieties that are drought/pest resistant etc.  This can be said of many other plant species that human beings consume too.

What about animals?  Using the same thinking, many animals also ensured their survival as a species by being useful to the humans, like the chicken.

The chicken will not be hunted to extinction by predators. They are propagated by human beings in a safe environment, and chicks being hatched and raised in assisted methods.  This ensures their survival as a species.

But the question that I keep asking myself is, would you consider your species successful, if the main purpose of living is to be consumed by another species?  I always tell myself there is no right or wrong, or even no need for an answer.  My thinking is as follows.

No, not successful, because it is pathetic to be eaten.

Yes, successful, because you get to live a good life.  Everyone dies eventually anyway, but continuation of the species is somewhat guaranteed.

Learning Point: The solar system will die off one fine day.  We are not sure of human beings' future in the super long run.  To me, it is not about living or dying, but about how we live.  Make ourselves useful in the society/world.  Contribute, do our best at our job.  Make others smile.  No one may remember me many years after I leave, but at least, I help make some one elses' lives better while they live.
