Fruits

In general, fruits are good for us.  They provide us with three main benefits: Vitamins and Minerals, Antioxidants, and Fiber.

Over exposure to air pollution, second-hand cigarette smoke, charred BBQ meat, etc produces free radicals in our body.  Free radicals are unstable atoms that can damage our cells.  Vitamin C is a very good antioxidant that removes free radicals from our body. It also helps to improve our defense system, especially against flu and cough, and some say cancer.  As our body does not produce Vitamin C, we need to take them regularly.  Easy sources would be the Orange, Strawberry, Water melon, Papaya, Pineapple, Kiwi Fruit.

Red and purple grapes have substances in them that help fight aging, improve heart health, reduce inflammation etc.  The secret is in the red grape skin (not the white or green type).  Eat the whole grape instead of juices, as juices may have less fiber in them after the extraction process.

Vitamin C is water soluble though.  As such, there is no need to take too much at a go, as it does not get stored in the body.

Dietary fiber helps in our bowel health.  A diet full of fiber helps digestion and reduces constipation.  This is because fiber helps absorb water to soften our stool.  Without sufficient fiber, much of the water will be absorbed by the colon, making our poop hard.

However, doctors advise not to eat fruits together with our main meals, as the nutrients will not be able to be absorbed by our stomach due to the large amount of other food in it.  I usually have my fruits around 3.00 pm.
