He Who Knows Not

An interesting saying I saw on the internet some time back:

“He who knows not, and knows not that he knows not, is a fool; Avoid him.

He who knows not, and knows that he knows not, is a student; Teach him.

He who knows, and knows not that he knows, is asleep; Wake him.

He who knows, and knows that he knows, is Wise; Follow him.”


Basically it means:

Some people are ignorant/negative, and they are persistently stubborn.  Avoid them.

Some people are ignorant, but they want to improve.  Teach them.

Some people have talents, but they are not aware of their potential.  Wake them.

Some people are wise, and they are good leaders.  Follow them.

What is a wise man then?  In my opinion, they :
  • spend time thinking and reflecting;
  • have good insights on how to deal with people and situations to end up win-win;
  • don't jump to conclusions;
  • sees the larger picture when making decisions;
  • are good learners themselves;
  • don't get angry.
So, start looking for the wise men around us, and listen less to the angry ones.

Difference between a Quiz and a Survey

I asked a group of students in a group chat :"Does any of you use any other chat apps besides Whatsapp?  If yes, what are they?" One person replied :"Telegram".  And no one else responded after that.  When I asked why no one else replied, a few said "cos same, telegram". So, this blog is to to talk about the difference between a quiz and a survey, according to my humble understanding. A quiz is likely to be one that has a fixed answer, or a fixed set of answers.  For example, if someone asked :"What is 1+1?".  There is no need to respond if the person who responded earlier gave the correct answer.  We can, of course, say the same answer or give another answer if we think the answer given was incorrect.  In this case, it doesn't matter how many people respond to the quiz (but of course, a teacher will want more students to try to answer). The Lift Button Syndrome

We have all noticed how some people frantically press the lift button again and again (or the traffic crossing button), especially when the lifts are moving very slowly, or when the traffic crossing lights don't change immediately.  I believe their assumption usually is, there must be some connection issue, despite the call light being lit.  “Something must have failed somewhere, so I need to press a few more times, to ensure that the system gets the signal.”  It just like, some would press the door-close button a few times after they entered the lift. Do the doors close faster that way? The above usually happens in fast-paced societies, where many are inpatient.  When we do that, it stresses us, or vice versa, the stress that we are having causes us to do that.
